# Getting started with Featurevote

Set up a Featurevote board for a product, a community or a shared list, send people the link, and get your first votes.

Featurevote gives you a board where people post ideas and vote on them, with no account needed to vote. This guide takes you from a new board to the thing that matters most in your first week: **people outside your team voting on your board**. Boards that get an outside vote early tend to stay active, and boards that don't tend to go quiet.

Watch a condensed example, from naming a product to opening its public board:

## 1. Pick what people will vote on

When you set up a board, Featurevote asks **What will people vote on?** and starts the board to match:

| You pick | The board starts as |
| --- | --- |
| **A product or app** | A board named **Feature Board**. Give your website to prepare example requests after the board is created. Review and edit them, then publish the ones you want, or continue with an empty board. |
| **A community or audience** | A board named **Ideas**, with any ideas you type in. Members add their own. |
| **A shared list** | A board named after your list, with the first options you type in. **Get help** is off, since a list has no team to write to. |

Rename the board in **Settings → Details**, and edit its first requests on your **Feature Board**. On a list, **Private messages** in **Settings → Access and submissions** turns **Get help** back on.

Every board has its own address, like `your-account.featurevote.app`. On a public board, anyone with the link can vote. The page your visitors see is your **Feedback Portal**. Open **Feature Board** in the sidebar to see and manage your requests. **View feedback portal** at the top of that page opens the visitor view in a new tab.

## 2. Check what is on the board

If you gave a website, you first see an example review. Click **Prepare examples** to create drafts, or continue to your board. These are examples, not customer feedback, and nothing appears on your board until you publish. Edit or remove any examples, then publish the ones you want. Setup started from Discord goes straight to connecting your server instead.

A public board with no requests shows visitors the post box itself, so the first one can start typing straight away, and the **Feature Board** page shows a card with your board's link to send. Under it, **Or write a few requests yourself** takes requests in your own words, or a pasted list where each line becomes its own request. **Import** at the top of the page brings over another tool's export. See [Fill a new board →](https://featurevote.app/docs/guides/seed-from-url) for the full walkthrough. You can also add requests one at a time with **New Feature Request**.

## 3. Send the link and get your first votes

Until someone outside your team votes, **Home** at the top of the sidebar opens with a ready message that holds your board's link, with **Copy message**, and **Share** where your browser can share. Paste it where people already hear from you: a newsletter, a release note, a support reply, or the group chat.

Next to it is one more button, depending on what the board is for:

- **A product or app:** **Add the feedback button** takes you to the code that puts the board on your site.
- **A community or audience:** **Connect Discord or Patreon** lets members vote from Discord, and lets a higher tier count for more.
- **A shared list:** no second button. Sending the link is all it takes.

Below that, **More to do** links to the next step with your requests, **Make it yours** (name, welcome text and colors) and **Invite your team**. **Install and share** in the sidebar has every way to put the board in front of people. See [Install Featurevote →](https://featurevote.app/docs/guides/installing-featurevote) for each one.

After the first outside vote, Home becomes the list of what is waiting on you.

## 4. Close the loop

When you ship something people asked for, mark it **Done** and leave **Notify Voters** on. Everyone who voted and left an email hears that it shipped. Then publish a [changelog](https://featurevote.app/docs/guides/changelog) to tell everyone else.

That is the habit that keeps a board alive: people ask, vote, and hear back when it ships.
